Gregory J. Rys, Ph.D.

Executive & Medical Psychologist

A Pennsylvania Licensed Psychologist guiding others to optimal wellbeing since 1984.

I am very grateful and happy to have you visit the kickoff of the newly renovated MedicalPsych.Org as well as the addition of updated news from the desk of Dr. Rys.  This blog is a depository of musings, suggestions, and advocacy for the integration of psychology within health care, the business, banking and social sectors.

This kickoff is particularly dedicated to medical patients, especially cancer patients and their loved ones.  Historically there have been many labels to identify a psychologist who specializes in such treatment:  behavioral medicine, medical psychology, health psychology, clinical health psychology.  If it sounds confusing, it reflects a public awareness, education, and advocacy problem that we in the mental professions must take responsibility.  The fact that mental health stigma, embarrassment or treatment hesitancy is still existent in this modern educated country remains a challenge.  MedicalPsych.Org is a modest contribution to elevate the discussion of promoting the integration of psychological services within every medical service line.

Dr. Rys teaching.

For too long, the mental health profession has differentiated itself from medicine.  It is the staunch position of MedicalPsych.Org that psychological services are both a branch and integral to all branches of medicine.  And like other medical services, psychology is not just meant to benefit those in immediate or emergency need because of an erupting mental illness crisis.  Psychological services are also meant to promote well-being and prevent the development and exacerbation of an emotional pattern from becoming a psychological illness.  After studying and promoting such principles since 1980, finally, there are hints of an emerging recognition and application of the principles of psychological well-being within medicine.  This blog is just another example of this psychologist’s lifelong drumming of wellness advocacy.

“Psychological services are also meant to promote well-being and prevent the development and exacerbation of an emotional pattern from becoming a psychological illness.”

I look forward to your return readings.  Please feel free to take advantage of the website information and resources.  In addition to MedicalPsych.Org, I will be regularly posting on LinkedIn.

Stay up to date with my LinkedIn & Blog:  send a LinkedIn “follower” request.  I look forward to continuing the discussion.  Next news from my desk will be a discussion of what differentiates medical psychological services from other mental health treatment.  Stay tuned!
